Early Half Eagles
1805 $5 BD-1, High R.3, AU58 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/c, with a heavy rim cud at the U in UNITED. BD-1 is the most plentiful of the five 1805 half eagle varieties, first in the emission sequence. In Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties, John Dannreuther estimates that as many as 10,000 to 15,000 of the coins struck with this date were produced with the BD-1 die pair. As a result, the issue is a popular type coin, and it is collectible in high circulated grades with some patience. The current near-Mint coin displays partially lustrous fields with medium straw-gold color and light high-point wear. Scattered small abrasions accompany the grade, and eye appeal is pleasing.
