Walking Liberty Half Dollars
1947-D 50C MS67+ PCGS. CAC. Both sides of this stunning Superb Gem exhibit intense iridescent toning that is undoubtedly the result of the cardboard and paper packaging that was used for Mint sets that were sold to contemporary collectors. Sales of those sets, known as double sets, began in 1947, the same year as this coin. A Guide Book of United States Coins explains: "Uncirculated Mint sets sold by the Treasury from 1947 through 1958 contained two examples of each regular-issue coin. These were packaged in cardboard holders that did not protect the coins from tarnish." Today's collectors, of course, prefer the word toning, and the present piece is exquisite. The obverse displays dappled light gray with peripheral rose, lavender, and emerald toning. The reverse is primarily antique-silver with splashes of golden-brown toning. This example is one of 19 examples that PCGS grades MS67+ with none finer (2/24). CAC: 42 in 67, 0 finer (2/24).
